You should always mount a horse from the right side unless you want to take a bumpy ride to the ground. The indians actually used to break their horses to mount from the opposite side so when the cowboys stole their horses they would be thrown off... tasty little tidbit!

Right is the side you are told to mount from, however, and good trainer will tell you to train a horse to allow you to mount from either side. The reason for this is you may stuck somewhere and have to mount from the left side.

Generally it's the left side of the horse. You place your left foot into the stirrup, grab the top of the saddle, pull yourself up while you swing your right leg over the saddle. After your seated make sure both feet are in the stirrups and hold the reigns in your left hand. giddy up!
