You'll be fine. Upon hearing your accent, you will become the focus of their curiosity, and they will treat you very kindly.

The south is known for it's "home cooked hospitality." You'll love it. It's a lot like the small towns on the outskirts of Rome. Life is a lot slower and families take time for eachother. And most Americans are VERY friendly. You'll probably notice the friendliness of the south, the religiosity, and the obesity. They could stand to lose some weight but they are very very good people.

By the way, I was in Italy this summer and I absolutely loved it. Good people and beautiful scenery. Milan was a little weird but Rome and St. Peter's were unbelievable.

The south tends to be less cosmopolitan. I think as an Italian you should take the opportunity to visit New York and Los Angeles. More international culture in these places. Still, southern US has lots of beautiful things to see, and big cities with many different types of people.
