It's really cheap if you get off your butt and just do it yourself. It'll even make you feel good about yourself.

Average is irrelevant for most uses.

It depends upon:
your local market and the competition
the size of the house ---are we talking 400 sq ft or 20,000 sq ft.
the degree of soil --are we talking 12 football playing pizza eating teenagers that hang out at home with all their freinds and their dirty socks, or a single Felix Unger type who visits the highrise once a month?
the level of cleaning required -- season cleaning, or three times per week light maintenance?
the frequency of cleaning (more frequent cleaning agreement may result in a lower per cleaning charge by the cleaner)

Regardless of the national or world average, if it does not meet your local market conditions and your particular demands then it is irrelevant.

Most house cleaners will either charge you a fixed rate according to what you need done. You of course will have to have them do a walk through with you to determine what they will charge you and make sure you agree. Other house cleaners may charge you at an hourly charge. Here in St. Louis, the range is $15-20/ hr.

Where I live, the lowest you'd pay is $12 an hour -- $25 is the high end.
