My co-worker was selected for an advanced leadership and processes management certification course. Most people either didn't apply, weren't recommended or eligiable (a BA or BS degree is required and 7+ years with the company, he has about 15). Everyone was happy for him, but no one thought he really deserved it either (Poor work ethics and completely lacking in interpersonal skills). Most everyone said he really needed to go to that program. Now he is washing out of this 16 week program after two weeks, AFTER the company already paid for it. He is washing out due to missing too much class time. He missed too much class time due to hypochondriac condition, which the company already knew about, but didn't take into consideration due to legal reasons, meaning they wouldn't want to get sued because of it.

He completely pisses me off because no one wanted to see him fail. He is likely going to whine to me about it, how the company is trying to screw him.

Let management worry about. If they are the one who recommended him, they are also the ones who have to explain to their management how this happened.
If you get into the middle of it you will be labled as a non-team player and only hurt yourself. Your expression of opinion will not influence the outcome.

It is very sad story in my opinion, and I really feel sorry for others who qualify for a position. You can not do much and I urge you walk away from him and concentrate for your success. Politics at work is very important and you need it badly in order to survive in office. The big Boss already knows but he or she is choking with law suit if anyone want to touch him. Now I urge you not to get close to him and I am sure the company will have another ball game to play. In my personal opinion, he will not last the next round. Trust me.

And people wonder why being a leader is so difficult. Not everyone is cut out for it.
Stick around and keep throwing your hat in the ring for promotions with a solid work background.

I think that that's between your co-worker and his boss. It's certainly none of YOUR concern or anyone else outside the supervisory chain.
You have no right to be privy to the reasons for his wash-out and should therefore keep your trap shut and not spread rumors about him. You risk your own employment by doing so.

Ugh. also, even as they get on the phone and talk loud adequate for the human beings driving on the interstate to hearken to. I generally do my perfect to in reality ignore it, yet each so often I finally end up having to bypass smoke lol

Well, they knew about it, but so did he. If he signed an agreement on the class and what would happen if he didn't complete it - he should honor it. He's got a degree, he's not a kid. He needs to take responsibility for his actions.

If you want to take the course in his place, go to the appropriate person and ask.
Otherwise, unless you are responsible for evaluating this co-worker, you need to MYOB. Anything else will be seen as sour grapes on your part.

He needs to provide proof that he was really sick or the cost of the course should be garnished from his check. Hypochondria is a real condition but many people who claim to have it are not clinically sick with it. I don't believe he should lose his job because of it. I believe he needs to be made to get some psychiatric help for it.

Welcome to the twisted world of corperate America and PC gone wild. If we could string up all the lawyers and start from scratch we all might get along and do a honest days work for an honest days pay.

There really is nothing that can be done. Your employer chose to send the wrong person to this certification program. Hopefully, they send someone more qualified and dedicated in the future.
