I am starting classes tomorrow and yet to have my loan money. I have no money to buy the books for my classes, but after talking to the school I am expecting it any day. Could I possible make it through the first class or two without my books? I have my chemistry lab scheduled for the first day of classes as well?

yeah you can, most people don't get their financial aid until at least a few days before or a few days after class, and most professors understand this. also, a lot of students won't buy their books until after the first week or two to see if they are going to actually use that book in class. just let your lab instructor know that your loans haven't come through yet and that you haven't been able to purchase your course pack/lab manual yet.

With a possible exception in your labs, you will be able to make it through the first week without books, maybe even the first two.

It will just take a little bit of extra work to get everything read for the first week of your tests which will be in three to four weeks.

If you really need the reading material make friends with people in your classes and see if they might let you borrow their books, or make copies.

Yes--this is something I've had to deal with. You should have asyllabus that gives the topics in each class--if not, ask your professor(s) what topics will be covered--and explain your situation. Then go to the university library and check out a recent text (or texts, one for each one you are missing) Then use those books to fill in until the money comes through. Its a hassle--but it will work. Also--you may be able to borrow from the professor in some cases (but BE SURE to return anything you borrow promptly).

Aspirin helps for these headaches, too :)

Most school bookstores allow for you to charge textbooks onto your school account like credit which will be paid once your school money comes in. If this option isn't available, then on your first day of school or if you know anyone who will be in the same classes who already has their books, ask if you can make copies of at least the first chapter or two until you can get your books. I have done it for many students who were paying for the books out of their own pockets and couldn't afford their books at the beginning of school.

yeah you could make it a day or two. you might end up behind in the readings but if there is an assignment due, you can ask to borrow someone's book to make copies of the first few assignments and such.

for some classes i never even bought the books, but that's a judgment call on your part.

as for the lab, you can partner up with someone who already has the lab manual.

Along with what the PP said, most University libraries keep copies of the class texts on hand for in house loans. There is usally a time limit on them, but you can always make copies of pages you need and then return the book.
