Hmm, I think I'll have to go with "The Cask of Amontillado."
This gruesome story is an excellent example of the use of an unreliable narrator. Montresor tells his tale of revenge smugly, as he invites the reader to applaud his cleverness much like the narrator of "The Tell-Tale Heart." By telling the story from Montresor's point of view, Poe forces the reader to look into the inner workings of a murderer's mind.
I first read it in high school, SO many years ago, and it made a powerful impression on me. I've reread it a number of times since, and, of course, knowing in advance what's going to happen doesn't affect the tale's chilling ambiance in any way whatsoever.
What a classic!

For a poem, I believe I'll choose "To Helen":

Helen, thy beauty is to me
Like those Nicean barks of yore,
That gently, o'er a perfumed sea,
The weary, wayworn wanderer bore
To his own native shore.

On desperate seas long wont to roam,
Thy hyacinth hair, thy classic face,
Thy Naiad airs have brought me home
To the glory that was Greece
And the grandeur that was Rome.

Lo! in yon brilliant window-niche
How statue-like I see thee stand,
The agate lamp within thy hand!
Ah, Psyche, from the regions which
Are Holy Land!

My reasons: It's so atypical of Poe to have written a beautiful lyric poem, with no horror, no morbidity. To me, it shows his range as a writer; he was, admittedly the master of the macabre, but he could also pen extremely lovely verse.

I don't know if it is my favorite Poe story, but I did write a 9-page paper on "The Masque of the Red Death." for my American Literature class last semester so it is one I have studied pretty in depth, analyzing all the symbolism Poe used in the story.
