how to use netgear without plugs?

I just got a netgear wireless router but I dont get it cuz there still has to be a plug from the router to my laptop....I want to go around my room with it....did I buy this for nothing??

You only need a wired connection between the router and computer while you're setting up the router. Once it's been configured you can go wireless.
