Andy was walking in the rain. The floor was so unstable, Andy slipped and fell.

Independent variable (cause) = the rain
Dependent variable (effect) = Andy slipped and fell

Is this right? Does an independent variable mean "cause"? Does a dependent variable mean "effect"?

An independent variable is what the dependent variale relies on in a way. I guess it is kind of like cause and effect. Like if Bob broke his arm by skateboarding, the breaking of the arm would be the dependent since it wouldn't of happened unless he was skateboarding.
