There are actually two hard parts of a pointe shoe. The bottom part which is hard is called the shank. It can be ordered in a variety of hardness. There are soft shanks for more advanced students, and medium and hard shanks for the less advanced. There is the tip of the pointe shoe called the box which can be softened to be broken in.
