The Stones are great but the Beatles are the true icons.

I think you need to narrow that one down a bit... I think the Beatles made more impact in the 60's. The stones were still playing a lot of blues/r n b covers back then, like so many other british bands, (and i'd say the who and some of the mod bands of that era doing those were more 'true music icons' ).

The stones are music icons when their whole career is taken into account, but just in the 60's the beatles win hands down.

(and in my opinion they can't really compete with the beatles as far as 'iconic' status goes in any decade.. :P)

The Beatles get all the recognition but I think it was more than just them. Without the Big 4 (The Who The Beatles The Rolling Stones the Kinks) I dont think the beatles would have gotten the notoriety.

They are two sides of the same coin. The Beatles (at least initially) were the happier, poppier, more listener friendly of the two, while the Stones were darker, and represented a more rebellious attitude. The Beatles sang about love, the Stones sang about sex.

Objectively, the Beatles had more #1 hits, and sold more records overall, so it's easy to hand them the trophy of iconography. But, the reason I feel they were the more important of the two bands was because their music evolved, and did more to influence future artists than did the Stones.

Have to say the Beatles, because other bands tried to look and sound like them. Even the Stones to start of with. It's a bit funny this perenial question. The Beatles and the Stones seemed to have an awful lot of respect for each other. The Stones appeared in Beatles promos (Hey Jude for one), and John Lennon was in the Rock n Roll circus. I also heard that they would time the releases of their albums so they wouldn't clash.

The Beatles and the stones were both great in their own rights but for a band/group that brought music ahead of it's time you have to look at The Moody Blues.
