It seems that Marty Schottenheimer is great at getting wins in the regular season, at getting production out of his players, everything except making the right tactical choices in the playoffs, at crunch time - as head coach, he's not much of a chess player....

It almost seems as though Schottenheimer would be the greatest assistant coach for a team ever, working with his guys and getting them to perform, like a captain in the military, but leaving the battlefield strategy to the general - another head coach

Can you imagine a Holmgren or Belichick-led team with Marty as the defensive coordinator or assistant head coach?

I would have to agree with you. In the regular season, Marty Shottenheimer has been a great coach by pulling out 200 wins, and establishing himself as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. Unfortunately, coaches are not remembered for how they did in the regular season. Coaches ARE remembered for their performance in the postseason and that is where Marty falls woefully short. He has a horrible postseason record, and he never pulls out the close games in the postseason (Chargers vs. Patriots and Chargers vs. Jets a couple of years ago). Don't get me wrong, Marty is a nice guy and a good coach, but he doesn't know how to coach a Super Bowl winning team yet, and until he does, he can't be ranked up there with the Belichicks, Gibbs and Parcells. I don't think that he deserves to be demoted to an assistant coach, but he also doesn't deserve to be ranked with the truly great coaches.

No, that would go against his legacy. Marty in NFL history has won the most games and has not been able to make it to the super bowl. His career as a coach will end as a champion, whether it will be as head coach somewhere else. Marty knows how to coach a team in the regular season, his calls during the postseason are somewhat questionable, however, he will win a championship one day.

Time after time, Marty makes a questionable decision that costs his team a chance to win playoff games. In 1986 it was dropping back into prevent defense instead of pressuring Elway with 98 yards ahead of him. This time, it was stupidly throwing out a challenge flag when there was no chance of a reversal, costing his team a critical timeout that could have helped them get an easier field goal. Every other year it's something else. Marty's a terrific coach, but he panics during crunch time.

Marty is a great motivator and teacher. It is unfortunate that a couple of his players did not play up to their ability last sunday. A couple of players probably cost him his job and we cannot blame this loss on marty ball. It would be foolish for the chargers to get rid of him and have to pay him the 3.5 million he has left on his contrat and have to pay another coach also.
