NYC has some of the best libraries in the world. Why buy, when you can get every book ever written for free?

I buy a lot of books on eBay. Sometimes they are not very cheap (if they are recent titles), but you can get a good deal there if you look for them.

Also, for older titles, amazon.com has a way to get used books as well.

Those are the two websites I use.

If you are looking to browse and have the time: Try libraries, thrift stores, garage sales and flea markets...I bought about 1000 books for $200 one week in just this way when I became a third grade teacher.

umm i'd check out thrift shop's, they have a lot of cheap book's, like I bought my harry potters books for around 2 bucks at goodwill ^.^
