I'm a student of the American Civil War and as such I will recommend a quick (because it is very short) read is Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane
If you want something longer, Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell, or any of the Michael or Jeff Shaara books. (Killer Angles, Gods and Generals, etc.) all good books.

Currently I am reading some Kurt Vonnegut (Slaughter House Five) and I'd have to say it is my favorite in a long time!
It is a 1969 novel by best-selling author Kurt Vonnegut. One of his most popular works and widely regarded as a classic; it combines science fiction elements with an analysis of the human condition from an uncommon perspective, using time travel as a plot device and the bombing of Dresden in World War II, the aftermath of which Vonnegut witnessed, as a starting point.
When the book was released, the bombing of Dresden was not widely known and was rarely discussed by veterans and historians. The book led to an increased awareness of the bombings and a reevaluation of the justifications given for aerial bombing of cities by the Allies during the war.
Also, it is a easy read and not that long...

Not too sure if you will like these as they may be a little old for you but Bernard cornwell has a series of books called the "Sharpe" series. They are all based on actual events in European history. They are a good mix of historical facts and adventure. The series follows the adventures of Richard Sharpe and i'm pretty sure there are 21 books in the series so far. There is also a tv series based on them starring Sean Bean.

Look into James Alexander Thom's Follow the River. It's about a pregnant young woman who was kidnapped from her family farm by the Shawnee. She escapes to find her way home. It tells the sometimes unbelievable story of her journey back to Virginia. Based on true events and real people, it's a very well written book and adventurous enough to read with enthusiasm. You won't want to put it down.

I LOVE the Red Tent by Anita Diamont. It is a fictional tale about women who lived in the Old Testament times. It is the story of Dinah, Jacob's daughter.
The book was only about 200 pages, and I flew through it. It is very provocative!
