Why not send them a year ago when they knew things were going sideways?

With the political pressure even from his own party,he figured he better do something fast,so he gets rid of those he knows disagrees with him than fires them and than get new people in and than come up with a plan to send more troops in 4 years after the first suggestion.

Sending more troops in is an admission that the current policy isn't working. Until this most recent election, they had no reason to make such an admission. If the Republicans had kept the House and the Senate, I'm sure that we would "stay the course" as always.
