It depends on the sex of the baby. For boys it is the godmother that holds, and passes the baby to the vicar. If the baby is a little girl it is normaly the godfather that does the holding.
These aren't hard and fast rules, just tradition. In reality anyone who the parents want can hold on to the wee one!

At my daughters christening i held her 4 most of it, but the vicar has 2 hold the baby for some parts. its fine for mum or dad 2 hold the baby

we just got our baby christened on sunday the godmother carried her in, her dad took her up and handed her over to the minister who passed her back to me (mum) and then the godfather carried her out!!

The Minister/Vicar holds it when it's being Christened.
Obviously one of the parents holds it until they pass it to him to christen.
