Depends what you mean by democracy. Is it one man/woman one vote or is it dictatorship by the ballot box? If the democracy cannot or does not ensure that the weakest in society are treated well and taken care of, then it is not a democracy. Like it or hate it, before the Berlin Wall fell, no one starved in communist countries, everyone had free health care. Education was free and public transport worked. Unemployment was there, but it was disguised,as you couldn't be without a job. Yes, you couldn't criticise the boys in power, but all basic needs were met. That's a lot more that we can say now that so called democracy has arrived there, helped nicely along by US Aid.

No. We do have a real republic however. In a real democracy, we would not ought to choose representatives, each physique individuals could be waiting to make an instantaneous effect on government--with out even having to vote. yet there are such diverse individuals that a "genuine" democracy would not artwork; so particularly, we've observed "Democracy Lite," the place we hire--oh, I propose choose human beings to characterize particular probabilities of the inhabitants. If we had a real democracy, and not purely a republic that asserts it has democratic ideals, then we would have a considerably diverse and in all risk greater chaotic, completely inefficient u . s .. As for what's befell in u . s . of america, particularly at the instant; i think of we are the farthest concern from a democracy and incredibly on the factor of one in all those no longer-completely-stepped forward autocracy, the place a small (and loud) kind of individuals no longer purely get to tell something individuals what to do, yet get further and further tax breaks and self-administered will strengthen if we disagree with them too lots.

I believe that it is just a lot of smoke and mirrors and puppets on a darkened stage to keep us entertained with our eyes off the real decision-makers.!!!! That was very well put, and maybe it will actually open a few eyes!!!!

We DON'T live in a true Democracy, but in a representative democracy.
A true democracy would cut out the middle men (the members of congress that the public elects to represent them) and have the citizens vote directly on legislation that affect them.

there has never been a pure form of democracy practiced. in the US we have a representative form where each member of the legistlature represents a block of the population. but not all voices are heard and weighted. This form was taken because our founding fathers were still leary of giving that kind of voice to the uneducated masses. Also the infrastructure to provide each person with a voice and to cast their vote on all points of intrest still aren't practical, even with all of our communcation technology that we have today.

Did you ever read the bit - "And to the 'Republic' for which it stands . . ."
The United States was never intended to be a true democracy. Under that system the minority would have no rights. Public opinion would rule. Our problem is politicians who are more interested in reelection - public opinion - than statesmanship.

we live in a world we we get presented with a bag of politicians and have to try and vote for the best of a bad batch
whats more they are meant to be the peoples voice, I am interested in when they last really acted in my interest.
3rdly if it was a real democracy politicians would come from all walks of life not just x lawyers and aristocrats.
thats my view anyway, who is up for uprising, we can take this world over

True democracy is nothing but mob rule. Whatever gang is bigger has the power. No need for separate branches of government, check and balances, etc. Is that what you want?

As time goes by we get further from our democratic roots...and closer to being a Republic of China. Our government is certainly not connecting with the people...that's a fact.
