I got my period a year ago, last January, and I still haven't told my mom. Then I was 13 and now I'm 14. I'm just too freaking shy to tell her, but I wouldn't be if I knew she wouldn't lecture me. I already know everything I need to know, but she probably won't believe me. My mom is also sometimes borderline psychotic and I am afraid she might freak out and yell at me for making her spend money on pads.

Wow, I didn't know I'd get this many replies, thanks for all the advice...to the person who asked If I use tampons or pads, I usually use pads, and a few days ago I tried a tampon but I put it in at the wrong angle and it was stabbing me all day, and at the time I had no access to a bathroom! To the person who said something about sex, I've never had it and I won't until I'm married.

My mom knew before I told her. I couldn't figure out why until I realized she was the one taking the trash out. You're Mom is expecting this to happen, it's a way of life. I don't see how she can get upset for this happening.

Girl please this is a normal thing for every woman. Your mother should know about it though. There isnt a reason for her to yell at you. You will need those pads or tampons whichever is more comfortable for you. Dont be shy about something like that. I got mine when I was 11 and my mom knew right away. Of course your mom may feel like you dont know all there is to know but just make her happy by letting her talk away.. If you feel you know then just sit back and let her talk.. But you never know you might learn something new...!!!

Well the best thing to do is....just get it over with. I understand what you mean by getting a little embarrassed, but it's only normal....we tend to feel shy about certain subjects and this is one of them. I am now 24 yrs old, and I still remember when I first got mine. She might lecture you and all but...also please remember that she's your mother and all she wants is to do her job as such. You might already know everything there is to know but hey...a little more info never hurt anyone. Hope it helps :D

Based on the details of your question, you should probably be more focused on making the right decisions in life in order to be able to support yourself once you turn 18.
Oh, and ALWAYS use condoms and get birth control if you can. Better yet, don't have sex; pregnancy will majorly mess up your life. There are Free Clinics and Community Services Boards that can provide birth control at no or almost no cost depending on where you live.
If you don't believe me about pregnancy messing up your life goals; look at the young mothers around you in your school/neighborhood/community and ask yourself if that is the best you can achieve!

you should just tell her. doesnt she have to spend money on her pads too? afterall, all women have their period. she would be a super hypocrite for yelling at you for needing pads. just sit through the lecture, it's just once.

I'm sure she knows. The next time she asks you if you need anything from the grocery store add personal products to the list as if you always have.
