It comes with a slow 56 Kilobits per second Modem to connect to the internet via a standard phone-line. This is called a 'Dial-Up' connection. You would need to sign up for internet access with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and opt for their 'Dial-Up' package (cheaper than broadband).

However, nowadays, its much better to go for a fast broadband service of 1 Mega Bit Per Second or better (up to 8Mbps). A lot of companies offer 2M bps and you can sign up for up to 8M bps. The speed you actually achieve depends on the distance you live from the telephone company building/box. I get 5Mbps.

For broadband, the ISP usually provides a free DSL or ADSL USB Modem that plugs into your computer as an external modem on a USB lead or a plug-in USB card. Some people say that a modem that connects via an Ethernet lead and Ethernet card in your computer is faster and more reliable.

For USB (Universal Serial Bus), your laptop must have a USB socket. Most modern laptops do.

You may also wish to consider a home network using Wi-Fi, where you can use your laptop anywhere in the house and connect by radio to a w-fi modem/router unit that plugs into a phone socket and connects to the internet. You would have a wi-fi card plugged into your laptop to communicate with the modem/router and printers etc.

Visit the ISPs website for more info on what you need to do and what hardware you need. Also see links to articles below.

A 56k modem simply is the modem installed in computers that allow you to use the old dial up way of connecting to the Internet. Most all computers come with the 56k Modem pre-installed on them. Nowadays very few users opt for the old dial up connections, but rather use DSL or CABLE which requires an Ethernet Card to be Installed on the computer and thus allows for a much faster and more up to date technology.

The '56k" simply means that the laptop comes with a 56K modem (modem is short for modulate-demodulate and 56k is the speed at which the modem reads data) in order for you to be able to use a telephone line to connect to the Internet with that modem (such as AOL,etc).
If you want to go 'wireless' ensure that the laptop comes with at least a 802.11G wireless notebook card.
That is if you have a wireless router at home or at school that you can use. Then you don't have to worry about a phone line.

it will be capable to be connected the internet, It will not "come ' with the internet, you will need to call an internet service provider to hook up with either a dial-up account that will use your 56k modem, or install a network interface card (cheap about 15 bucks) and go with broadband if it is available in your area , and the latter is much preferred!

No, that just means that if you connect the laptop to a phone jack that you could connect to the internet if you had an dial-up account with an internet service provider. They would supply you with a phone number to dial and set up a user account for you to logg into.

Get a Mac:

or

They can run much more software than other computers, since only they can run OS X, Windows, and Linux. OS X is much more secure than Windows, and it's easier to use.
