When i plug it in then try to boot up with the XP disk in the cd drive it will say somthing like cant find hard drive. Then i swop it with the old one and it boots up fine. Any ideas?

I'll bet it says it can't find an operating system. Hit F12 when the computer starts and you should get a bootup menu that will let you start from the CD. You might not have the CD as a bootup choice in bios.
You should also leave the 18gb drive in so you'll have all your files and hardware drivers available when you install Windows on the new one.
