Seriously guys I don't want to wake up and find my roof on top of me and my kids. I rent so although it would be grand to buy a new house I can't afford it. Single mom of two.

Well, do you live in a really cold climate? When I had an older house, one winter it was so cold that there were really loud bangs every so often. It scared me (almost) to death! Found out it was joists (or 'something wooden' near the roof) that were contacting and expanding in the extreme cold and wind. The ceiling never fell in, though. If you have plaster walls, some cracking is normal.

I'm guessing something heavy fell on top of your home. Best to go outside and see if that is what happened. Second guess would be the attic is collapsing. Either one, you need to contact your landlord for further evaluation of your situation. Another option would be a 911 call for the fire department to have a look for you.

Have a general contractor come over and look up in the attic, to see if there is any damage, if not have him check the foundation as it might have shifted causing your house to shift. Call your landlord and have him come over and look at it, it is his responsibility.
