Clifford Joseph Harris Jr. is his real name

His original stage name, T.I.P., stems from his childhood nickname "Tip", which he got from his grandfather. Due to his Southern drawl, many fans mistook his name for "Chip", so he began spelling it out "T.I.P". Upon signing with Arista Records subsidiary LaFace Records in 2001, he shortened his name to T.I. out of respect for label mate Q-Tip. He is also known to go by "Rubberband Man" and the self-proclaimed "King of the South" (which has created several cases of controversy between other southern rappers, such as Lil' Flip and Ludacris). He is the leader of a rap group known as P$C.

Initially went under the moniker of T.I.P., a version of his childhood nickname Tip, he later shortened it to T.I. out of respect for fellow rapper Q-tip who also joined the company as its recording artist.

A native of Atlanta Georgia born Clifford Joseph Harris Jr. on September 25, 1980, this good-looking guy has been rapping since he was still a nine-year-old boy to then sign deal with Arista Records subsidiary LaFace Records at the age of merely nineteen.

T.I is short for T.I.P(Ten-Inch Player). That was his original rap name but it was too similiar to another rapper, Q-Tip who has been featured on Janet Jackson tracks, he's from Tribe Called Quest; anyways T.I dropped the P, thus T.I.

The Short Answer: It is short for Tip

The long answer: His Grandpa used to call him Tip, but people thought he was saying "Chip" so he began to spell out his name...T.I.P.....When he signed to Arista records, they already had an artist with a similar name (Q-Tip) so, T.I.P. shortened his name to just T.I.
