I think the phrase "wax on, wax off" is just a lesson of simplicity. It shows you can get a result with little or no effort. What is more simple than rubbing on wax and then wiping it off to gain a shine?

Haha, good movie, that one. ^^ I beleive it wasn't "wax on, wax off" So much as it was how he was making the kid (Don't remember his name now) Work, rather than training him. The lesson was patience, obedience, trust- Don't be hasty, you might miss a lesson on the way!

It's from the movie "The Karate Kid". It was part of the kid's training. It has come to mean, "Do what you have to do even if you don't like it. It's for your own good.".
