It's because of the collusion between the manufacturers. In a truly capitalist society, this wouldn't happen. They wouldn't be allowed to sole-source the consumables. Unfortunately, our government is owned by multinational corporations, so laws are either written in favor of the coporations or they're ignored.

I service many types of printers and have a lot of experience in this area. What you describe is the 'Gillette syndrome', give away the razor so you can sell them the blades.
If you stay with inkjet printers, get one that has separate colors, black, cyan,magenta, yellow, so you replace just the one that runs out.
If you go through cartridges fast, look into a color laser printer. They have come down a great deal in price. (Some less than $300)
Ink cartridges last for at most hundreds of pages, laser for thousands. If you buy two black and one color ink cartridges a month you would be wise to buy a laser as it would pay for itself in less than a year.

Most Ink Jets and most laser printers only have a half full cartridge included. So it's nit really as cheap. Look at the descriptions and you will see that's the case, or call the companies. To find out who might not practice this. I bought a colour laser from Samsung and the cartridges are full loads.

A $15 ink cartridge is STILL cheaper than a $150 printer!

That's the first thing I check before buying a printer. Then I check the number of pages it claims to print per minute, and whether it has an waste or used ink reservoir. If it does, I won't buy it, because that one feature means a service call.

you can get refilled carts at ink dot com for 1/8 of the price of name brand......

LMAO - my cartridges are $50/set and the printer was maybe $150. Duh - never thought of it!!! It's ok - I like it rough anyway.
