if it isn't plugged into the mains when you remove the battery, then it won't continue to run without a power source and will switch off.

Sometimes when Windows hangs/freezes on a laptop, the only way to escape is to take out the battery for a couple of minutes and put it back, then restart the computer in the normal way.
If you want to remove the battery to replace it or just to examine it, then shut down Windows in the normal way, and remove the battery.

As the two answers above advise you to do, keep your computer plugged into an electrical outlet and then remove your battery....as long as the computer has a power source you should not lose anything on the screen.

Yes because the computer will shut off, provided it isn't plugged into the wall. You also run the risk of destroying the laptop by creating a power surge within its capacitors.
