Well first you should ask yourself, "Self..do i have speakers"?
Then look on your desk, if you see speakers than that is a start.
Next you'll need to know if you have a soundcard or if it is at least integrated into the motherboard.
Go to Control Panel ->System->Device Manager->Sound
See anything there? Right click it to update the driver or go to the proper manufacturers website and see what is available.

If you are lucky, you can go to device manager (Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager), scroll down if necesary to view sound, video and game controllers. You should see your device listed there. If not, it will be listed in the category of Other.

If it is listed (brand and model) you simply go to the manufacturers site and look for the drivers, download and install.

If not listed with a model, then you may have to use a program like SiSoftSandra (there is a free version for home users) or if you can find aida32 someone has archived on a website, you can try that also.

Unfortunately, it seems you will have to dig a bit in an unfamiliar program to get the info if Windows doesn't tell you the brand and model. However, if you can find that info, getting the driver is the easy part.

If it is a branded computer (Gateway, Dell, etc) you may be able to type in the serial number and get the driver there as long as the sound hasn't been updated since the sale of the machine.
