I think they are equal in cleaning power but powder costs less per load because the manufacturers shipping charges are factored into the retail price. You can't compare ounces of dry product to ounces of liquid, you need to compare number of laundry loads the dry product yields to the number of laundry loads the liquid yields to see the savings...and of course you need to use the recommended quantity of degergent per load when you wash to get the savings specified.
I use the powder (tide is my favorite) and it works best when you disolve the powder in the water first and then add the clothes...otherwise you may end up with residue on the fabric, especially if you are prone to overloading your washing machine.

Idon't know about color fading, but I find liquids easier and neater to use. That being said, we now know that the standard detergents you buy have so many unnecessary chemicals. There is a company called Melaleuca which has a line of products called Ecosense where the detergents are safer. Also Seventh Generation is a good line of natural cleaners. I really like "Ecos" detergent, which you can purchase at Whole Foods. It has a great scent and also is very natural.

Powder detergents are stronger and clean better when it comes to dirt. Liquids are best for delicate items. If using powder, start load on warm water and add detergent. Stir with a laundry stick, I use an old broom handle, until dissolved. Then go to cold and add clothes.

I prefer liquid detergent. It dissolves better, thus preventing the formation of a powdery residue on dark clothing. I don't know about the color fading. Many factors might affect that. I use cold water, delicate or gentle cycle for dark colors and reds.

That it a new one on me. Did this friend happen to say WHY she believes this?
I have always used powder, both my Gain detergent & my Clorox 2. I do not have trouble with our clothes fading fast. I think what is worse is the cheaper brands of detergent & also not washing the clothes according to the care instructions...
