Glasnost means openess. It was Gorbachev's way of allowing debate and criticism within the Soviet system, particulary of the mangement of the economy. It was his attempt to force through his economic reforms (perestroika - restructuring) by showing the major economic mistakes made within the Soviet Union in the past and any attempts to resist the reforms would be seen as foolish. He hoped that when people saw the errors made in the past the people would back his economic reforms. However, it backfired badly, by relaxing control on the media he allowed other grievences to surface, particulary nationlism in the Soviet Republics and when people saw how bad the economic and social system was within the Soviet Union people turned against the whole Soviet system itself
