a electric water heater has anodes you can replace.are elements.not sure which one there called? what about a gas water heater no electric?

If you mean galvanic protection the elements you can use are either magnesium or aluminum. Electric or gas doesn't make any difference

Get the brand and model off the water heater and:
1. check the manufacturor's web site for a manual for that model, or
2. contact a local dealer for that brand and see if they carry replacement anodes or elements for that model.
