I'd really recommend that you go and feel different basses. They all have something unique to offer. I found a Schecter Bass that only cost $600 that to me sounds as nice (feel, etc...) as the MusicMan bass that costs around $1500. However, it's important for you to actually play them to see what you like.

If you aren't very experienced yet, I'd probably recommend Ibanez for a cheaper start up, or the Fender cheaper.

Good pick-ups are important. I like EMG pickups. It's a good idea that if you are testing different basses in a guitar shop, to keep testing them on the same amplifier without changing the settings. Also set the bass features (tone, etc...) to neutral so you can hear the true sound of the bass. This will help you narrow down your choices. Once you've narrowed it down, then start messing with the tone/booster knobs and see which one provides the widest range.

If money is no object, buy a Carvin, Lakland or Sadowsky. Any of these will run you at least $1000 or more...sometimes much more. Fenders are great too, just don't buy a Fender without playing a bunch of them. If you want something on a budget, I've found you can't go wrong with an Ibanez...in fact, I just picked up a real nice used Ibanez GSR200 for a hundred bucks! The best model for you is one you can afford and feels good.

It's all down to preference, but the best best is Modulus and Warwick. They're like $1000+ though. I really love Fender though, they look good, and play good. The Fender Standard Precision Bass models is awesome, price is $424.99+ (depending on the color).

I would have to say the Fender model. Price range starts at 200.00 and upward depending on the style & type.
