When my daughters was born doctors would say give them water.Keep in mind my girls are now ages 15 and 17.When I had my son whom is now 7,doctors said "no water" that he would get enough from his powdered formula. So who really knows? I would just ask your pediatrician to be on the safe side.

Babies can have plain water at anytime. My kids had plain water at about 2 to 3 months old and their doctor said it was fine. The earlier they have water the better they will be about drinking it. Instead of only wanting sugar filled juice like some children who won't even think about drinking water. It can't hurt them and it is good for them.

If you are nursing most pediatricians will say 6months but if you are bottle feeding usually whenever you start to introduce strained foods ( around 4months) or a sippy cup, I have four children and it changed with each one there is no exact answer.. if you have a newborn I would suggest not too because the water will not satisfy the baby and when the baby nurses or has a bottle it will cause a belly ache due to being bloated

they can drink water at anytime but it needs to be boiled then cooled or you can buy the distilled water from the store. I have a 4 month old and she drinks water all the time and the doctor said its fine as long as she is getting a regular amount of formula or milk too. I give her water when she still is crying but i know she has had enough milk or in between bottles since i am trying to get her on a schedule. If she acts hungry I just give her water until it is time for a milk bottle.

As long as the baby is getting their daily nutrition in, water is fine at anytime. There is water in everything so it can't hurt. What you don't want to do it substitute water for feedings. Their little tummys can only hold so much and you want them to be full on things with nutritional value.

Good question. Honestly, I never gave my daughter water until she was a few years old. Not that I was told not to give it to her, but I started off with Formula, then switched to Milk, then started giving her apple juice. I never did give her plain water.

BTW- the formula that I gave my daughter from the day she was born was mixed with plain water (it ran through my water filter, but other than that, it was just plain water).

Edit- It looks like some angry mother just went down the line and gave thumbs down to any answer that wasn't hers. I don't see what she could disapprove of in my answer. I just said what I did with my daughter.

Babies can have tap water at any time. It is actually better than bottled, since it contains floride and minerals that is stripped from bottled water.

The sooner you introduce plain water the better the drinking habits as they grow older.

Be careful with the size of the hole in the nipple, since it is much thinner than milk they may choke. Introduce it slowly.
