My youngest child was born when I was 38 and my other children were 18, 15, and 12. She was a surprise for us. I developed Gestational Diabetes with her so they didn't want me to go too long past my due date. When I was 40 weeks my cervix still had not softened, I had no dilation or effacement so they planned to give me a gel insertion of prostaglandin in hopes of softening the cervix enough to get things moving. They did the gel insertion the next week when I was 41 weeks. I was told to expect some cramping feelings after the procedure, but that I might not go into labor for several days and it might not work at all. However, I had a bad reaction to the gel and I started having 6 minute contractions that put the baby in distress. It was pretty scary for awhile. They moved me quickly to high risk delivery and prepped me for pitocin, but I went into pretty hard labor right after that and our daughter was born about 6 hours later.

It doesn't always work, but it can help get things started in 24 - 48 hours.
You're not really late yet, so if there is not a medical reason to induce, try to avoid it if you can. However, you mainly hear people's horror stories about inductions. They do make the contractions stronger (you can still have an epidural) but in most cases everything turns out just fine. So here's a good "just in case" induction story. My niece was induced just a couple of weeks ago and was really dreading it. They admitted her to the hospital at 8:00 p.m., and started the medications at 10:00 p.m. (expecting a next day delivery) but her little guy just needed a nudge, and he was born 4 hours later, no problems, no complications.
Good luck.

The ripening agent DOES NOT always work!!! I actually digressed. I went from almost 2 cm's before PGE1 (prostaglandin gel) to less than 1 cm the next day. It only gave me a few very weak contraction... Try not to induce...Induction increases your risk of needing a c-section. You are NOT late!!!! Average 1st pregnancy is 41 weeks 1 day. And Pregnancy with prior births average 40 weeks 3 days!!! You can go 2 weeks past that... I know you are probably very uncomfortable & anxious but wait... I was told I was late at 41 weeks...I was induced...I had an 18 hour labor with 1.5 hours of pushing & ended up with a c-section!!! Your body & baby know best!!! WAIT!!!

what you're speaking approximately feels like they'll use Prostaglandin gel: Prostaglandin gel is located interior the returned of the vagina and helps soften and ripen the cervix. In some women, labour would initiate without better intervention. I had this achieved, they'll shop you in long sufficient to verify you do not have a bad reaction to it or bypass in to labour. I went into labour approximately 24hrs after the gell so perhaps for this reason they are sending you abode, untill genuine labour kicks in. oftentimes with this technique they provide you as much as 3 doses 12hours aside to start labour even even though it varies with each women as to what number doses it takes.
