why did the united states go to vietnam in the first place?

To prevent another communist genocide.

Because people were so stupid in this country as to allow the extremely evil to manipulate us into giving up even though we were, ummm, slaughtering them, that genocide happened. The communists cruelly put to death MILLIONS of innocent people. Understand this if you understand nothing else about that war. This was the goal of the liberals all along. They knew what was going to happen and everything they did, they did because they wanted this to happen.

it was mainly political, we went because vietnam was trying to turn into a democracy, simply put. thats why they broke into south and north vietnam, north being the 'vietcong' as they were called. now, the other reason, was because the USSR, the united soviet socialist republic, was becoming powerful and along with china, tried to help vietnam, win. by giving them more and more help, ie. tanks, soldiers, and a lot of supplies. we eventually got word of what was happening and said, "hey south vietnam, if your we're willing to help you guys out, since we're at war with the soviets".
unfortunately people we're very mad about going into vietnam, it was a huge mistake. we just could not handle the war. we eventually pulled out, announcing our surrender. the cold war however went on, till 1989, when the berlin wall finally fell.

The decision to go to war there (oops, I mean "police action") was one that was widely second guessed. It's possible that some other action would have been equally as effective in accomplishing a non-commie world.
