I am not sure where you got the date 1433 as it applies to Japan. Japan didnt really cut itself off until around 1600. Japan had had a bad experience with foreigners (specifically Christians) during the 1500s. At that time Japan was still in its warring states period, where rival warlords contended for power. When the Christians and western traders arrived they brought Christianity and guns. This really mixed things up. Some of the warlords converted to Christianity to curry favor with the westerners and to get guns, which would allow them in turn to defeat their rivals. When a local warlord converted so did the entire populace of his domain. The problem was once you unleased the Christian genie it was hard to put back in the bottle. A lof of Japanese took the new religion to heart, and as you know Christianity demands ultimate allegiance to God not Caesar. So to make a long story short, when Ieyasu finally took control of Japan (with the help of guns of course) he decided to snuff out the troublesome Christianity and to kick out the foreigners. Though these things had contributed to his ultimate victory, once he unified the country they could only prove troublesome. So around 1600 Japan became highly isolationist (though it still traded with China and had contact with Korea).

I don't know about the Japanese but the Chinese turned inward (restricting trade, etc.,) after it was learned that the Chinese Emperor Zhu Di (influenced by his Muslim eunuch Zheng He) had turned Muslim.

But it was closer to 1421-2 than 1433.

Zheng He had piloted one of Emperor Zhu Di's treasure ships around the world - but virtually all of what the Chinese mariners learned was destroyed as China turned inward

There was also the problems with Europe and the silk trade that came to ilk as the Arab world and the Chinese didn't trust Europeans - they thought of them as illiterate.

Preserve their traditions and culture, and because the feudal lords did not want them to know or understand other cultures so that they wouldn't complain or try to change the country.
