Take it as directed and you should be fine. It's included in some multi-vitamins too so make sure you're not combining and taking too much.

Biotin, a member of the B-vitamin family, is an essential nutrient in human nutrition. Vitamins are compounds that you must have for growth and health. Biotin supplements are used to prevent or treat biotin deficiency.Biotin also plays a role in DNA replication. Taking its name from the Greek word bios, meaning "life," this nutrient assists the body in metabolizing protein, fats, and carbohydrates from food. Biotin is necessary for formation of fatty acids and glucose, which are used as fuels by the body. It is also important for the metabolism of amino acids and carbohydrates.

Biotin needs to be taken with Pantothenic acid to be effective. They work together at the most basic level to produce enzymes that trigger many bodily functions, and they may assist in the treatment of various diseases
Biotin -
Promotes healthy nails and hair.
Helps the body use carbohydrates, fats, and protein.
May improve blood sugar control in people with diabetes.
The name of this vitamin suggest its widespread presence in the body. Biotin from bios, which means "life."
Multivitamins and B-complex vitamins usually include biotin and pantothenic acid (also called vitamin B5) and both are also available as individual supplements. The main form of biotin is d-biotin.
Major benefits: Biotin improves the quality of weak and brittle fingernails and may help slow hair loss, if it is due to a biotin deficiency.
How much you need: There is no RDA for biotin or pantothenic acid, but experts recommend that you get 30 to 100 mcg of biotin and 4 to 7 mg of pantothenic acid a day.
These amounts appear to be enough to maintain normal body functioning, but for the treatment of specific diseases or disorders, higher doses may be needed (You'd have to eat 2 1/2 cups of wheat germ to get 7 mg of pantothenic acid).
If you get too little: Deficiencies of biotin or pantothenic acid are virtually unknown in adults. Long-term use of antibiotics or antiseizure medications, however, can lead to less-than-optimal levels of biotin.
If you get too much: There are no known serious adverse effects from high doses of biotin or pantothenic acid. Some people report diarrhea when taking doses of 10 grams a day or more of pantothenic acid.
Guidelines for use: Most people will get enough biotin and pantothenic acid from a multivitamin or a B-complex supplement.
Individual supplements are necessary only to treat a specific disorder. In most cases, take individual supplements with meals.
Dosage: For hair and nails: Take 1,000 to 1,200 mcg of biotin a day.
Other sources: Biotin is found in liver, soy products, nuts, oatmeal, rice, barley, legumes, cauliflower, and whole wheat. Organ meats, fish, poultry, whole grains, yogurt, and legumes are the best sources of pantothenic acid.

Biotin is a B vitamin, water soluable, so excess is eleminated in the urine. It won't hurt you.
A deficiency of this vitamin is rare because it can be produced in the intestines. Consuming rancid fats, sulfa drugs and antibiotics can reduce the availability or absorption of biotin.
A good product for healthy hair is Bao-shi, available at most health food stores. Here's a link to read more: http://www.biomed-health.com/proddetail.asp?prod=B60010

It is a harmless supplement subject to all the rules of thum (start with a low dose and see how your body reacts, increase amount gradually, don't excede FDA recommended maximum). I use if myself and it's done wonders for my nails. Haven't noticed anything drastic in my hair condition, except it does seem to grow quicker.
Good luck!

Sure, it's fine- just take whatever the bottle says to. You might also consider a vitamin B-complex, too.
