What is the average cost of installing a stand up shower in a bathroom that does not previously have one. We are buying a house soon and want to know the cost difference between having one already in the house or installing a brand new one later in a house we like that has no stand up showers.

It varies quite a bit depending on the type of shower your talking about. For the standard fibreglass shower insert that you typically see at Home Depot. (You can ask them about installation cost. But keep in mind that they charge top dollar). I usually charge around 250 For basic the installation.
To "build" a shower out of say, tile, it would run into a couple of thousand or more. There is no way to give a good estimate in that case without an on-site inspection.
It seems to me that it would be cheaper to have one built now instead of later having to tear it out in order to redo it.

It would be cheaper to buy a house that already has a shower in it. You have to hire a plumber to do this, and they are not cheap! My husband works for Home Depot, and he's always worked around contractors. Trust me, they aren't cheap. Then again, this will all depend on what state you live in, and what their requirements are...and it will also depend on the type of financial picture you're working with...all in all, I'd say buy a house that already has what you want!
