To begin with, handle it wearing a pair of gloves, (ideally leather driving gloves). Once the snake is out they generally calm down. The snake will lose a few teeth but this is ok as they have plenty of them and they grow back for the duration of their life. Snakes only bite for one of two reasons, they are either scared or mistake you for food, (hence the importance of washing your hands after handling mice or food stuff). If it's only a baby and you're feeling particularly brave, the injuries incurred whilst handling the snake are not as bad as injuries you would willingly take playing with a kitten. Eventually the snake will become accustomed to being handled and desist from biting. It is very important that the snake gets out of this habit as a youngster as when carpet pythons are fully grown they will give a nasty bite. Please also be aware that carpet pythons are not the ideal snakes for novices and as a species are generally an ornery creature. Hope this helps. I kept a carpet python for 10 years and had much enjoyment from keeping it. Just perservere. Try and handle at least once a day unless it has just been fed, in which case leave it a couple of days before handling it again, (otherwise it may bring up the meal half digested and it may put it off feeding).

As I just got through saying a minute ago on a jungle carpet question along the same lines.....
It's a carpet python! If you had asked people who have owned them or read anything on them, you would have known BEFORE you got him that CARPET PYTHONS ARE ASSHOLES. It's just the way they are. You might try some of this other advice that typically does work on other snakes, but keep in mind, Steve Irwin was bit by every carpet python he handled for a reason, and it's not just that they were wild....
good luck.

carpet pythons are pretty agressive, but you can work with them... they are really nippy as babies.. here's a few things you can do...
- feed it dead mice... this will eliminate the connection between movement and food.. hence the movement of your hand won't be mistaken for food
- get a snake hook.. this will let you pick it up without getting bite, and get it used to being handled
- rubber gloves... snakes hate the taste of rubber gloves and eventually will be reluctant to bite because they will remember that when they bite they get an unpleasant taste in their mouth.. it will also protect you from the teeth until it gets bigger
- wear a sweatshirt when handling.. this is just to protect your arms from bites

Coastal babys need to grow a little. Handle him once every two days for now or less. When he gets to be about 1/2 thick, he will begin to calm down.

Snakes should be left alone for a couple weeks after you aquire them to let them settle in. DOn't handle it until it takes a mouse or rat from you. Then slowly start trying to handle it daily (when it is not in shed). It may take some time.

Get a snake hook. This way you can get it out of it's house without being bit. Once he is out and calmed down a little then pick him up with your hand. Don't just reach in there because, they are extremely defensive.
They do grow out of the biting stage...eventually...

you can buy some gloves, they don't like the taste (seriously) don't give up, just put your hand in the Viv at first and leave it there for it to get used to, then gradually pick it up, expect to get bitten lots (you chose a very snappy baby pet), thy usually calm down with time, just don't give up or you will have a very large unhandlable snake .
