Most of the stuff Aliki Protopsalti sings -- God , does she belt them out ! I like a lot of the traditional and regional and folk stuff too - I always call in on the Xylouris' in that shop in the arcade " cave " opposite the Ethniki Bibliothiki on Panepistimiou ,in central Athens , because they have the best collection of C D s I have ever seen , plus they are passionate about what they do , and very polite to this shambling Xenos with his mangled Greek - nothing is too much trouble for them to hunt out for you , and kyria Ourania generally orders me in an Elliniko to sip during the process . Rebetika , Pontiaka , Nisiotica , Rizitika from Kriti ...... Ola thavmasio ! I like the song called " The Rebel " from Crete , " ποτε θα κανει Χαστερια " and have learned it so that in kafeneions in the hills in the evenings , fuelled by Raki , I can sing it , which usually produces much conviviality , and more drinking of course ! -- the words are pretty murderous , so I privately call it " O Psychopathikos " ! The best recorded version I think is by Nikos Xylouris . Also there was a funny thing in the satirical magazine " Pontiki " when that big scandal was going on in Zoniana in Crete , Drugs and Guns and bandits , a cartoon of two guys in black with the tall boots and tsalvari headrags and Lyras , and the Lyric of the Sousta went ; - To Xasisi to Zosto , Thelei Boliko Nero ; Thelei Batso , Thelei Tsatso , Kai Politefti kapazo ; Ouranou Mylopotamou , kai Derma tou Ippopotamou !

The Song
Pali, trava skandali / Again, pull the trigger
s'oti prolavame ke zisame / to what we managed to live
simadepse ke rixe sto kefali / point the gun and fire in the head
Pali, tis kiriakes pu alitevame / Again, the Sundays we were bumping around all day
ke tis vitrines pu hazevame / and the shops we were loafing around
simadepse ke pata ti skandali / point the gun and press the trigger
De horizun omos etsi i zoes / Lifes, however, do not seperate like this
ton antropon pu agapithikan me toso kopo / the lifes of people who loved eachother with so much pain
i ke i dio mas i kanis os tin akri tis klostis / either the 2 of us or none of us until the end
isoropisame ke emis / we balanced ourselves
Pali, oti prolavame ke zisame / Again, whatever me managed to live
ke ola afta pu psithirisame / and everything we whispered
simadepse ke rixe sto kefali / point the gun and shoot to the head
Pali, kathos ta rouha mas soriazode / Again, as our clothes heap up
sta somata mas pu agaliazode / in our bodies, which get hugged
simadepse ke pata ti skandali / point the gun and press the trigger
De horizun omos etsi i zoes / Lifes, however, do not seperate like this
ton antropon pu agapithikan me toso kopo / the lifes of people who loved eachother with so much pain
i ke i dio mas i kanis os tin akri tis klostis/ either the 2 of us or none of us until the end
isoropisame ke emis / we balanced ourselves
