Why also are these preachers of hate and intolerance tolerated in some Mosques?

Firstly, Imam's are like qualified teachers, qualified in Shariah(Islamic law), Quran (recitation and memorisation) etc. This may be through university or through being taught by previous scholars. Secondly, I have been to most mosques in Britain and NEVER heard the Imam being a preacher of hate. They are not tolerated in mosques. There may have been cases where an imam didn't choose his words wisely and instead of making a statement made an offensive remark. I dont know. But this happens everywhere not just with muslims. Whatever colour of creed you have good and bad in all.

I like Tigresse's answer. But is she naieve? Saw a TV programme recently that showed a few scary Imams preaching very radical anti-Christian and anti-Semetic thiughts.
I don't know how muslim religious teachers are trained, but I would check, very thorugly, the credentils of anybody setting himself up as an authority in any area, not just religion. If you have any doubts then forgeddit.

Imam has same authority as any other person respected by the community.
He or she is responsible for own thoughts ,speech, and actions-
just like anyone else.
Those who attend the mosque are free to support imam or not to.

Same way a synagogue appoints a Rabbi
How is that for another co-incidence!

Knowledge of the Book-knowledge of the Law-ability to teach

The congregation, through their representatives, select the person
But I don't think we shall ever see a female Imam like we now see female rabbis
