Because it has been cleaned/disinfected by somebody for you. You will need to clean it properly before introducing it into the tank. You can do this by scrubbing it with a wire brush, and then a high pressure rinse. A soak in minor bleach solution wouldn't hurt followed by a VERY good rinse and freshwater soak with some de-chlorinator added.

Also, it will need to be waterlogged or weighted down to stay at the bottom or it will keep floating up. Tie/screw it to some slate.

You don't need to. However, if your going to use driftwood, first remove all the bark, then I would recommend soaking the wood in freshwater in a bucket for a minimum of a week, preferably two or more weeks, changing the water at least every other day. This allows a lot of the salt, tannins, pollutants, etc, to leach out of the wood. I would also recommend boiling the wood for at least an hour straight and then soaking as before for at least a couple more days. This will help to kill any sort of organisms, bacteria, etc, that may be inside the wood itself. After that you should be fine. Be aware that some woods have sap, resin, that is toxic to fish, so be careful what type of wood you put in there.

The others are correct in terms of sterilization of outside contaminants...but there is one other reason why driftwood is for sale - some people live much closer to a store than a shore.

Our Aquaria Society recommends boiling the driftwood, or heating to 350 F in an oven for an hour or so in order to sterilize the wood. Anything you find on the shore that won't fit in a pot or your oven should not go in your tank!

Because little bugs and parasites can get in the wood and it needs to be cleaned by professionals in order to get them out.

never add anything to your tank that your not sure about especially stuff that comes from the lake ,they have other parsites on them that can harm your fish and it would need to be treaty before adding to your tank.a nice peace of driftwood would run you about $10.00 it beats you buying all the fish that you may have kill.

The stuff you purchase has been steralized so your fish don't die. They sell this stuff that you can use to clean items before you put them in your tank, you can look into that if you have something that you really want to use.
