Hmm..I gotta say I don't know to many young women who like Bukowski, as many people think he is a drunk and a misogynist. (Look up that last word if you don't know what it means. I'm guessing you just saw the movie with Matt Dillon. Anyway, I personally don't really care for his writing; it is too lean and sparse, and often very bleak. But he does sometimes manage to convey an insightful glimpse into human emotions, especially those of lonely people. So to answer your question: I'd say he is a bit of both: An old fart who drinks too much but has some writing talent.

A fart is a fart, is a fart, is a fart. By any other name it would still smell as rank. Most folks who call other people old farts are young shits. A mind as poingant and clear as Bukowskis deserves consideration and respect. No matter his circumstances.

Once you have it all figured out, being an old fart is the only way to go.

He's just a brilliant but troubled mind who could not figure out his demons. Nor could he maintain a normal or decent way to live. But in trying opened up a discourse of ideas about life as he saw it. Sometimes fucked up but sometimes on target and insightful.
