hello,
Yes, I can try to name some of the dances. There is a whole array of dances but I thought I would give you an insight these main types, the most popular types. This is a long definition of the Ballroom Dancing - which consists of 3 main types:
A). INTERNATIONAL - which is split into two groups, Standard and Latin:
Standard - consists of the
Modern Waltz....
18th Century Austrian, Vienna. A dance to roll, turn, or to glide, move in a lively or conspicuous manner. A dance of colorful flowing Ballgowns,Tails, Weddings! Beautiful music! and strong melodies.
QuickStep....
Tango.....
Originating in Spain or Morocco, well before the early 19th century. The story of Tango was started with the gauchos of Argentina who wore chaps, hardened from the foam and sweat of the horses body. Hence to gauchos would walk with knees flexed into crowded night clubs and ask the local girls to dance. Since the gaucho had not showered, the lady would dance in the crook of the man's right arm. Holding her head back, her right hand was held low on his left hip, close to his pocket, looking for a payment for dancing with him. The man would dance in a curving fashion because the floor was small, with round tables, where he danced around and between them.
Viennese Waltz...
(almost similar as the Modern Waltz).
Latin - consists of the
Rumba....
Cha Cha....
Samba....
The Samba originates from Brazil. A festival danceof the street carnivals and celebrations. The music has an joyful contagious rhythm which makes even non dancers want to dance.
Jive....
Paso Doble....
B). AMERICAN - Also split into two groups, Smooth and Rhythm:
Smooth -
Slow FoxTrot....originated in 1914, by actor Harry Fox. He was born Arthur Carringford in Pomona, California, 1882 but adopted the stage name of "Fox" after his grandfather.
Waltz....
Tango....
Viennese Waltz....
Rhythm -
Rumba....
First influence 16th century, then 1913, main two sources of the dance Spanish and African, also Cuba. The native Rumba folk dance is essentially a sex pantomime danced extremely fast with exaggerated hip movements
Cha Cha....
1954, an offshoot of the Mambo. The dance is of three quick steps (triple step or cha cha cha) and two slower steps on the one beat and two beat.
Mambo....
1943, but originated in Cuba. In Haiti, the "Mambo" is a voodoo priestess, who serves the villagers as counselor.
East Coast Swing....
A style of 1920's, black community dancing to the contemporary Jazz music, discovered the Charleston and the Lindy Hop, Whip, Savoy Swing,Supreme Swing,Jive, .....to mention just a few.
Bolero....
Originally a Spanish dance in, it was changed in Cuba initially. It is now present as a very slow type of Rumba rhythm. The music is frequently arranged with Spanish vocals and a subtle percussion effect with Conga or Bongos
C). OTHERS - these consist of,
West Coast Swing....
Hustle....
Salsa....
A Latin and Afro-Caribbean dance, maybe Cuban. A pattern of six steps danced over eight counts of music.
Merengue...
A national dance of the Dominican Republic and Haiti
(late 1700's early 1800's, a combination of two dances, the African and the French Minuet).
I wonder which of these you will take up, if any? the salsa? its the one that appeals to a lot of today's young individuals. but one needs to be quite fit. lol.
