The 1 inch rule is only for small fish like neons and guppies. If you apply it to mollies, catfish, goldfish, and the like, you could throw 10 baby dalmation mollies in your tank, sure -- they're supposed to grow to half a foot long! Many of common goldfish and "suckerfish" (plecos) can reach adult sizes of TWO feet. They wouldn't get that big in a 10 gallon, sure, but that's because putting in such a small tank stunts their growth, damages their health, and shortens their lifespans.

Some easy to care for fish for a 10 gallon might include:

9 fancy guppies (3m, 6f) OR 3 guppies (1m, 2f), 3 cories
OR
4 platies (1m, 3f)
OR
1 dwarf gourami, 6 neons OR 10 neons
OR
1 betta, 7 neons OR 1 betta, 3 cories

You can put one inch of fish per gallon of water. So, you can have 10 small fish inside a 10 gallon tank. Of course, that is a lot of fish. You might want to stick to the same kind of fish though, because some do not do well with others. Beta's dont do well with other beta's unless they are not males. 2 male beta's will only fight until one of them dies. I'd go with goldfish, mollies, angelfish, guppies, or something of that nature. Tetras are more aggressive fish and will fight with other breeds.

I would go with my happy fish size ruling. Choose from the following. These are full grown sizes.

10 one inch fish.
5 one and a half inch fish.
3 two inch fish.
1 three inch fish.

I know many people would say you can get many more fish, but I have found with this stocking level you can very easily maintain your tank and see colorful healthy fish that are active, instead of crowded in and barely surviving.

you can put any kind of fish in your tank that you want! Just don't make your tank to over crowded. I have three 3 inch fish and a sucker fish in my 10 gallon. Also make sure not to mix aggressive fish with community fish, just stick with one or the other. :)

very properly, for the 5 gallon, i could propose a male betta. Petco actual has alot of categories of them, and that i've got in my opinion chanced on an interest interior the KING betta, yet it is simply by fact it is so huge. in case you hit upon the main appropriate colour and beautify the tank appropriate, you would be able to desire to have an stunning setup! Ahh the ten gallon. those are continually exciting to inventory. i'm going to make it easier to be responsive to my setup that appeared to paintings enormously plenty. I placed 5 dwarf loaches in. that would look as though plenty, even even though it form of has a opposite result. they have little barbels which will bypass throught the gravel and %. out misplaced nutrition, so in a fashion, they do greater sturdy on your tank than undesirable. Too upload to this, you would be able to desire to upload a male betta. they are oftentimes to not recommend to the little loaches, so aggression does not be a issue. And he could in all danger swim from section to section on your tank, luckily patroling it. yet it is merely my opinion. yet please, no goldfish. i think you would be able to desire to objective considered one of those little "feeder fish" you spot, and attempt to maintain it alive. opportunities are high that's going to die very quickly. yet while it does stay to tell the tale, that's going to in all danger get huge, so i does not recomend it. yet once you're waiting to get an more advantageous tank IN CASE, then decide for it :)

I have a ten gallon and I follow the same rule of up to 10 inches of fish in the tank.

My tank has three long finned danios (3 inches), two skunk loaches (about two more inches), three ottos (another three inches) and a rainbow shark that is about two inches long - so that is my ten inches. When I first started my tank, I started with things like platties, glass fish, dwarf frog, betta fish, devil sucker, and similar stuff.

i would suggest
betta
molly
korydora
guppie
or a african clawed frog
of course keep the frog and betta aone if you choose those. bettas are aggressive and clawed frogs will kill other fish when they get older with their claws.
