My cousin is 16 and has a boyfriend who is over the age of 19. She thinks she might be pregnant. She hasn't really had any pregnancy symptoms yet but she is still very worried. What she wants to know is, if she is pregnant, can her boyfriend get in trouble with the cops or even go to jail? I thought that only happened if it wasn't consentual (if she didn't give him permission to have sex with her).

Depends on the laws in your state. They differ everywhere.
Just Google "Statuatory Rape in (your state)".
Mostly I'm aware that yes a guy over 18 can get in trouble for having sex with a minor. That's only if your friend or her parents decide to press charges though.
If your friend IS pregnant she should get a paternity test done just to be sure. Also, make sure if she's pregnant that she considers all her options. If her bf is not going to be a supportive and cooperative part of the childs life she would probably do best to put it up for adoption. Adoption is a great way to go.
If she is going to keep the baby and her parents will help raise it then she will need to goto court and get an order for financial support.

No, honey don't listen to all those people don't there or up there. My sister was 15 and her boyfiriend was 18 and it was prefectly fine in our state. Most age of consent is 16, he made the baby too he sould have to pay and if you scare hold out for two more years then go after him. Most juged that deal with child support don't care about age but rather if the baby is being take care of. The juged will make the boy pay, like I say he make the baby too, 16 might have been young but not stupid. And it only a three year differents. And if he try to get you in troube the jugde will see what the boy is doing and is trying to get out of pay child suppost and probably close the case. Make the boy grow up and get child suppost from him. Also my older sister have a baby when she just turn 16 got pregnant at 15 the father was 19, she took me to court, he pays never got in trouble.

Statuatory rape is when an adult has sex with a minor and it's consentual. But even though it's an offense, hardly anyone is arrested for it. It's generally used when a girl is with someone significantly older than herself and her family is upset that his "maturity" is what coerced the girl to have sex with him in the first place. If the relationship does, indeed, seem like it's consentual and the age difference isn't concerning, no one will really pay attention. But if he controls her due to their age difference, then that's a red flag that even YOU should be worried about.

This all depends on what state the couple live in and the parents choice on whether to press charges or not. Some states have the age of consent at 16 but other states vary. Check your state laws out to make sure. Also she should discuss it right away with her parents so she can get the right prenatal care immediately.

Depends on the age of consent for your state. Some states have consent at age of 16 years old.
Trouble with the law will come to those who are under the age of consent and are reported to the police by usually the child parents.
If nobody complains, the police will not investigated.

By law it is okay for someone 18 or over to date an 16 or 17 year old but by law may not have sex with them, if they do it is considered by law statutory rape and holds a 5-20 year jail sentence with it and once he gets out he must register as a sex offender.

well he could, it depends what state you live in and if the girls parents ( or the girl) press charges. now if she was 14, i don't even think charges would be needed to convict him of statutory rape. in most states there is like a 4 yr. law. you can have consentual sex with someone as long as they are less that four years younger than you.

He sure can. He can even go to jail. Problem is...the 16 year old is a minor...and her mother or father can file charges. I have a friend who's brother is in prison now. girl said she had sex willingly with him....but mom said to prosecute...and he's serving 11 years. NO parole

It depends what the state laws are. In Arizona, 16 is considered the age of consent, therefore, it would not be statutory rape.

I WILL TELL YOU MY STORY I WAS 15 WHEN I GOT PREGNANT AND MY NOW FIANCE WAS 17. HE WENT TO JAIL FOR 30 DAYS AND GOT 2 YEARS PROBATION. AND I CONSENTED, WROTE LETTERS TO THE JUDGE, SOCIAL SERVICES AND IT DID NO GOOD. IF SHE IS 16 AND HE IS OVER 18 THEN YES HE WILL GO TO JAIL. HE IS AN ADULT AND SHE IS A MINOR. IT DOES NOT MATTER IF SHE CONSENTED TO THE LAW SHE CAN NOT CONSENT.
