I am very much a proud American, but do u think before long, we'll be going the way of Rome and the British Empire? What do u think will (or is) bring about our downfall?

>>Is the United States doomed? <<

No, I don’t think so…but, if the current and subsequent administrations continue with their “pre-emptive” war on terrorism, then the world community won’t look too favorably upon the United States and potentially may hasten it.

>>I am very much a proud American, but do u think before long, we'll be going the way of Rome and the British Empire? <<

I’m a proud Homosexual American, but I don’t think the Empire of the United States [sic] is going to fall, at least not in our lifetime.

>>What do u think will (or is) bring about our downfall? <<

I think there will be one of two ways:

1)It’ll be because of our over reliance on the sword. Meaning, that if someone upsets the United States, we send in the military and find a military solution to a diplomatic problem and that doesn’t work. (From with-out)
2)That our Democratic Republic has become a Theocracy. All the liberties and freedoms we enjoy today will be replaced with biblical law. (From with-in)

The Roman Empire lasted almost 600 years in the West and continued on for another thousand years in the East (the Byzantine Empire). That's a total of 1600 years! The British Empire lasted from the 16th to the 20th century or 400 years plus Britain, as the leader of the Commonwealth of Nations is still in existence..

If someone told me our nation will thrive for another 200 to 1400 years before it'll face a possible decline...well, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it...would you?.

The Roman and the British Empires' had there time on top of the world empire. Power is felting, no empire in the known history of man ever lasted. Power is a cycle, the true measure of a world authority is not how much power they control but rather how they use there power, where to oppress or enlighten for history will be the true measure of greatness. You can fight time because it always wins!

Well Rome was overun by barbarians a number of times over many campaigns before it finally collapsed for good, which couldn't be helped.

The British empire though largley dissolved, is still thriving today and has the 5th largest economy of all the countries in all the world! For such a reasonably small country, thats pretty good by any standards. Britain is respected throughout the world. Britain has a massive influence on the world table, as through its history of warring with other nations trying to take it over, civil war, etc it has evolved to a fair and civilised society. Its by no means perfect, far from it, but I don't know anywhere else quite like it with as much common sense and fairness, mostly shared by most people within. And of course the English language. Fantastic!

America is not a bad place, though perhaps a little behind in terms of modern times. By that I mean attitudes of black people (racism in general), gay people, lack of respect for environment, laws where accused people may not necessarily receive decent quality defence teams, difference between rich and poor. Corruption within the government, backhanders for the whitehouse from the oil companies, exploiting poor countries to make cheap products whilst making America much richer...
Also a pretty selfish streak in that it mainly only ever gets involved in wars/conflicts if it holds any importance for America, not because it would be the right thing to do just to simply give a helping hand to others in need.
America has a habit of globalising their own products abroad, e.g coca cola, McDonalds. Think it is a place in India, not sure, where a coca cola factory takes all the water away from a towns water supply to use in their bottles. The people are left with nothing, and it would cost something like a years complete wages to get connected to mains water supply. Basically American companies tend not to give a damm what they do, who they do it to, as along as they make their money.

I could go on, but I'd be here for ages and I can't be bothered. In answer to your question, the Amercian people will be at war with lots of people in the future because of the past and present policies they use abroad. But so will the rest of the Western world, so they are not alone, just that America in particular goes so much further than everybody else to piss off people that are non American. America is more than just a country, its a continent, therefore would be very hard to obiliterate. So until the planet blows up (by which people everywhere hopefully can travel elsewhere) or some nasty virus comes and kills us all, America will always stand the test of time, and it does of course have its friends with the Western world and vice versa.

P.s I may perhaps sound anti-American but I'm not, I realise it is the big companies, governments etc that have all the power and often make poor decisions, as does many governments anywhere from time to time. In such a large country, many Americans possibly may not be fairly represented etc and it is wrong to be judgemental on America and Amercians as a whole, so I do not, I take people for who they are individually.

I love coca-cola as it goes very well with my Bacardi, followed maybe later by a Big-mac or two, Hollywood films, the A-team, Star trek, computer games (ones they make), Donald Duck and various fit lads America churns out...

The modern corporation has made the United States quite a different place than any other "empire" that has ever existed. The "America" that once existed has been gone for some time now.

Somehow, the USA will survive. Eventually the citizens will find a balance between taking advantage of Mexican labor and Chinese Import "junk" and we will get labor and manufacturing jobs back. We now live in a global economy and we need to get used to the fact that we now need to compete with other countries for that gallon of gas or that pound of steele. We really need to be more concerned about global counterfeiting of the US dollar and terrorism. Both are capable of sapping the strength and viability of our economy and our ability to compete globally.

One word: CHINA

China will surpass America's economically in about 10 years.
Their military is also growing at a alarming rate.

I recommend you read the new Time magazine, the cover story talks about China becoming the new superpower. Plus, it is not hard to imagine another cold war (China v. US) that could hot....

Nations rise, nations fall. It's all part of the cycle of history. I think yes at some point in the future the U.S. will come crashing down someway somehow, but we will likely be dead before that happens.

Not considering the effect our actions have on the global outlook.

Not stopping to consider diplomacy, or anything else that would not require direct force. Or at least quit giving lip service to diplomacy, and actually do it.

Lack of border security; and allowing illegals to continue to plunder our resources is what will doom America.

PS Some dude, ti's obvious you've never lived in Texas or California. Illegals aren't just here to do "yard work". You've obvously never experienced the effect of depressed wages, anchor babies, and alien indigents who use emergency rooms as primay care physicians, to name just a few.
