a cruising sail boat or a tall ship, any boat who's hull stays in the water, has a maximum speed of :
the square root of the waterline length times 1.25...so a boat 25 foot on the water line would have...anyone, class?.......6.25 knots ( 6.88mph) max speed....a big ship like the Coast Guard's Eagle could ( maybe) do 18.5.....
a catamaran like a Hobie cat actually skims across the water so they have much higher speeds dependent on the wind, but 20-25 is not unknown

Depends alot upon the size of the boat, number of sails, and size/shape of sails, and, of course, wind speed.

I sail on a 47 foot yacht and it goes between 6 - 8.5 knots upwind and anything up to 14 knots downwind.
It all depends on the size of boat, the type of rig and the type of sales.

It also depends on the diriction the sail boat is going compared to the wind direction. Most modern sailboats sail faster not when going down wind (with the wind) but rather when going cross wind or even somewaht into the wind.
