Self waxing does not work. Salon waxing works, and it is embarrassing, but you just have to tell yourself that these women do not care, they have seen everything anyways.
If you still cannot bring yourself to get waxed, save up for laser. In the meantime, try tend-skin solution for the bumps. Don't worry - a lot of woman have this problem. I use an electric trimmer to do it, which is not really close enough and takes forever, but no bumps.
I am saving money for laser. I am so sick of this problem. Being a woman takes a lot of work.

First off, don't give up. The feeling of a good, smooth shave is ultra rewarding :)
Even if your razor isn't dull, make sure it's a multi-blade, like Mach or Gillette Fusion (highly recommended). Use a shaving cream for sensitive skin (another tip: go to the men's shaving section, where they have special foam for facial bumps...works like a charm).
Try soaking it in hot water for a few minutes, and even conditioner, so soften the hair and open the pores.
If you want to put on a sort of after shave or coolant afterwards, make sure to avoid 3 ingredients: dye, alcohol, and fragrance. These will irritate your skin. Fruit of the Earth makes an all natural Aloe gel that should do the trick. And remember, whatever you use, keep it OUTSIDE the outer lips ("labia majora"), lest you may risk an infection.
I hope this helps, as this is what I do, and I'm siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilky smooth :) Good luck, hun.

I have the same issue. It might be that you have sensitive skin. Since there's usually a lot of friction down there from your underwear, it rubs together against the skin and irriates it, causing a rash.
There isn't much you can do, but even waxing will have the same effect. The best thing you can do is where comfortable, airy underwear the day you shave so it doesn't get irritated, and lotion liberally there, or start thinking about laser hair removal? But the easiest thing to do is salon waxing.
I'm sorry I can't help much.

You could try shaving WITH the hair instead of against it, this could solve the red bumps and irritation. Also, make sure you are using enough shaving cream/soap while you shave. When you get out of the shower, put a moisturizing lotion on, or just some baby powder. I always put baby powder on after I shave and I have never had a problem. I don't have bumps and it isnt itchy.

Maybe you could try hair removal lotion. I have tried it and I wouldn't do it everyday but it did work. Its way smother than a razor could get it. One huge warning though, with those lotions your skin gets hyper sensitive for a few hours after so stay away from lotion of any kind!!! It hurts like a b!+c4. As far as waxing. I agree, home waxing is difficult and really painful, and its too easy to hurt yourself. If you're considering laser treatment keep in mind that laser treatment is not a one time thing. it takes about 3 visits to complete the job.

Hair bumps are common after women shave, especially in the bikini area.
If you always get in grown hairs, you should not use razors to shave. If you decide to still use a razor, you need to invest in a good one.
Consider a professional wax job
Otherwise, use Veet (bladeless razor & creme). It is available at your local drugstore. You can use veet on your legs, under arms, bikini area. A little messy, and it takes 4 mins or less to kill the hair BUT it prevents razor bumps! I use it in the shower!
There are topical ointments for your razor bumps, browse the feminine care aisle.
Good Luck

i hate shaving! even my legs break out when i shave. it sounds weird, but using a diaper rash cream like Desitin helps get rid of those awful red bumps after i shave. also, many people have suggested hair removal creams, but that just burns my skin.. i would not suggest it!

get scrubby gloves and use them every day to exfoliate your bikini line. ingrown hairs start because the follicle gets blocked by excess dead skin cells. you should also shave in the direction that your hair grows (it trains the hair to grow in that direction)
