I'm sorry but saying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a mouthful. Why not MLK, we know who they mean? And for the rest of your statement...huh? Do you hear yourself?

I don't think the shortening of a name to initials is a sign of disrespect. John F. Kennedy's name was often shortened to JFK. It's just an abbreviated way of referring to someone.
Yes, Martin Luther King was a great man who died for a great cause. While we honor him, let's also hope that if anyone else speaks out for the cause of freedom, that he or she does not meet the same fate as Martin Luther King.

I think it's an honor that people are so familiar with Dr. King that initials are enough for people to know what is meant. It's the same with JFK. It would be sad if you said, "MLK" and no one knew what you meant...or had to ask. As for the portion of your question about a great Mexican leader....you need to elaborate. "Bring them freedom" in their country or to assure them of proper equalities as they become citizens of the U.S...or some other aspect of freedom?

I feel calling it MLK Day is derogatory. It does not make a person tired to call it 'Martin Luther King Day' with some degree of respect for him and the people whose rights he championed. More so if people are aware of the sensitivity involved.
Give it some more time. A redeemer may rise for others if they are oppressed.

part 1) it's not insulting to call someone by their initials adn saying someone's full name is not a measure or show of respect, how you utilize what they gave to the world, is.
part 2) Cesar Chavez was a "great mexican [american] speaker" who helped improve conditions for farm workers and brought attention to issues affecting the Latino community
part 3) he spoke in English.

we Southerners have our Confederate memorial day to honour our dead and our ancestors sacrifice.
The native Americans need a memorial day. also.
I appreciated what king stood for. I have gotten shivers up my spine listening to him. he reminded me of Gandhi while I heard him speak.
I do think it is proper to always say a persons full name out of respect.I come from an area where people will say hello and then say you first and middle name. or first and last name. not just your first name.when you shorten something its showing a definite lack of respect unless of course its The word Y'all, which means , you all.haha.
Peace... pray for peace...That is what he wonted.for us all. to come together in peace.
