No a degaussing coil is a specal electromagnetic field generator that demagnitizes a CRT.

There is a degaussing coil usually included in the monitor hence the bonk sound when turning them on. If your monitor doesent do that anymore or if there is no effect you may have to replace the monitor.

Happs controls sells degaussing coils but Opening up a monitor is something that is best not done. There are capacitors in there that can and will kill you if you dont know what you are doing. not only that but they can stay charged for years even after the monitor has been unplugged.

I dont even mess with CRT monitors anymore they are too inexpensive in the used market to justify repairing them. $20 for a 19inch CRT or cheaper.

Check your local freecycle or craigslist

Using a magnet to degauss your CRT monitor is not recommended because it can, in severe cases, permanently damage your monitor (incorrect colours will appear in the area of the screen that was magnetised).

Some monitors degauss automatically when the are powered on, and most have a degaussing option. You might wish to use a search engine to locate the manual for your particular monitor model should you not have this to hand.

Failing the above, you could use a soldering iron or a bulk tape eraser to degauss the monitor using the methods set out here: http://www.wikihow.com/Degauss-a-Computer-Monitor

No you can't, placing a strong magnet anywhere near your monitor would simply add to the problem.

Here is a link with some more info on your problem.

I wouldn't try that. Use the monitor's Degauss function.

NOOOOOOOOO!

I permanently damaged a CRT monitor by bringing a powerful magnet near it. It caused huge dark bruises which never went away.

yeah i'm not smart i dont know what gausses is/are. but

even if you take a week magnet to a monitor it will screw the colors up. and mess the screen. so unless you want to screw it up dont put a magnet on it.
