How can I keep a heavy wool sweater from pilling?

You can't; unless you never wear it. The best you can do is remove the pills. I suggest a sweater stone, they work great.

If you dry clean the sweater and alternate times, like wear it twice then dry clean it, It usually works for me, hope it works for you, Good luck!

hand wash it in woolite and let it air dry. to never let is see a machine will save it.
