From what I read, it is when the brain has no more thoughts. That is the scientific answer. The religious answer is our souls leave the body.
The most interesting answer I ever read was from a doctor who, over many years, had young children that medically died in a hospital, were brought back, and told him and his staff that (a) they fell asleep (the instant they died), (b) rose up and hovered over their bodies. They could describe in DETAIL what the doctors were doing to try to revive their bodies, (c) a bright light appeared in the ceiling, where they floated up to the bright light, (d) a person appeared at the end of the bright light and told them it was not time for them, and to go back to their bodies.
The part I found most interesting about this was that these were children very young, all had this happen to them many years apart, they never met or knew each other, and most had NO religion teachings in their families. But ALL had the same thing happen to them.
Hmmmm.
